Happy New Year! It is exciting to think of all the adventures the new year and the new decade will bring. Here at Douglass, we know that exploration plays a critical role in a student’s educational journey. Lessons from coursework come more clearly into focus when paired with new experiences from beyond the classroom. With this knowledge in mind, the College renders immersive, experiential learning opportunities a top educational priority. By harnessing our experiential learning programs, Douglass students are not just college students—they are engaged citizens and emerging professionals. For many, new 2020 adventures have already begun.
Students in the Global Village program kicked off the new year with international travel. This year, the Creativity House traveled to Costa Rica, La Casa Hispánica traveled to the Dominican Republic, and the Business and Entrepreneurship House traveled to Mexico. While there, all three houses dedicated themselves to service-learning projects that benefit local communities. During service-learning projects, students discover how their talents and ideas can enact global and local change.
Our Externship Experience, embedded in our new Reilly Program at the BOLD Center at Douglass for Advancing Professional Development, took place over winter break. In total, 140 students undertook workplace learning at companies, nonprofits, schools, and governmental offices around the region. Host sites included organizations such as Johnson & Johnson, Merck, Novartis, The New York State Supreme Court, and the University of Pennsylvania Law School. By spending one to two weeks alongside experienced professionals, many of whom are Douglass alumnae, students gained a glimpse into the expectations and excitement of their chosen fields. Our alumnae site mentors are integral to student success.
It is a thrill to witness our students develop into tomorrow’s leaders alongside alumnae who are committed to their academic, professional, and personal success. This spring, we have many opportunities at Douglass for connection, growth, and adventure.
