This past month, Douglass students traveled to New York City for a day out to Broadway. The group went to see Suffs, a musical that chronicles the women’s suffrage movement in the early twentieth century leading up to the ratification of the 19th Amendment.
“Along with a group of amazing Douglass students, we learned more about the women’s suffrage movement that transformed the country for women nationwide,” said Vishva Gunasingha DRC’28, a first-year student who attended the day trip. “I will always remember all the women before me and use that legacy as perseverance in my life."
After the play, students and staff went to dinner, connecting to discuss the play and share their knowledge and perspective on the women’s suffrage movement.
“As women, we must stick together and continue fighting for independence and individual freedom,” Vishva said. “Thank you to Douglass for giving me this wonderful learning opportunity!"
In honor of Black History Month, we’re reflecting on the experiences of Black students at Douglass. Photos from The Douglass Century, Scarlet and Black, and more, paint a story of Black student life at Douglass and Rutgers—a story of student organizing, steadfast advocacy, and critical contributions that have made the campus community a more celebratory and inclusive place for students of all backgrounds.
