Each November, I take time to reflect on all that I am grateful for in my life. Serving as Dean of Douglass is the honor of my life’s work. I am deeply grateful to be entrusted with leading an institution such as Douglass. From alumnae to students, the Douglass community is composed of trailblazers who strive to achieve their dreams and make our world a better place.
Douglass continues to thrive because our broad community recognizes the power of collaboration. I extend my thanks to everyone who ensures that our programs produce confident and ambitious students who are prepared to take on their futures with integrity. Our inspiring undergraduate program staff, dedicated alumnae volunteers, and generous donors all come together to ensure Douglass is the site for an advanced and profound experience for students. From scholarship recipients to externship applicants, every Douglass student benefits from our collective commitment to the Douglass Difference.
This month, Douglass had the opportunity to host The Mothers of the Movement, a group of African American mothers who have lost their children to gun violence. The speakers shared their experiences of turning loss and grief into social and political action. They also discussed the importance of advocacy in honoring the legacies of their children. Courage is often an overused word. Not here. Motherhood is often undervalued. These women leaders broaden the meaning of the “good mother,” shattering all expectations of how to serve while managing the deep well of pain. Our students saw this, and learned immensely from the sense of purpose presented by the mothers.
Of course, I thank our talented students. Their hard work truly deserves our gratitude. Every day, the passion and ambition of Douglass students make me honored to carry out the Douglass mission.
