Become a Douglass Mentor

Peer-to-peer mentoring is an important element of Douglass Residential College. Explore how to become a paid peer mentor to other Douglass students below.

  • Become an experienced peer mentor and leader! Through feminist teaching theories, experiential learning, and mindfulness practice, you will critically examine gender’s role in shaping leadership while enhancing your decision-making, communication, and emotional regulation skills. Throughout the course, students will apply their skills in real-time as peer mentors in the Barbara Voorhees Mentor Program. A unique collaboration with students from Dublin City University’s leadership course helps foster global perspectives on leadership, knowledge, and power. *Required for students accepted into the Barbara Voorhees Mentor Program.

  • Students completing the above Mentoring and Leadership Practicum are eligible to become paid peer mentors through the Barbara Voorhees Mentoring Program.

This program that serves as a real-world application for students completing the practicum. You will serve as a peer mentors in a section of Knowledge and Power, Douglass' foundation course. You will offer students one-on-one advising appointments, help them acclimate to the University, and navigate academics. This is a unique opportunity open to Douglass students!

There are about 20 spots each fall and about 10 spots each spring. Students who have taken or are currently taking Knowledge and Power are invited to apply.

Mentors can earn up to $1000 serving as a Barbara Voorhees Mentor

Professional Mentoring

There are many opportunities for Douglass students to shadow workplace professionals, connect with industry leaders, work alongside visiting scholars and faculty, and network with our community of over 40,0000 alums.

  • An externship is an immersive workplace experience lasting one-two weeks in which students are mentored by a professional in their area of interest.

Participating in this job shadowing experience allows students to work on projects, learn about the status of women in the workplace, and get an inside glimpse into the day-to-day work life of a particular career. Meeting people on the job also helps to build a professional network. Many externship site mentors are Douglass alumnae who care deeply about the success of current Douglass students, provide valuable advice and guidance, and even may be willing to serve as professional references.

  • The Douglass Faculty Fellows Program connects students with Rutgers faculty and cutting-edge professionals to conduct special projects and research. Fellows include innovators from a variety of fields, including the fine arts, social justice, medicine, academia, activism, and more. Students may be eligible to receive a stipend for their work.

  • Douglass STEM programs provides a unique career development opportunity. Through workshops, guest industry speakers, site visits, and 1-1 mentoring, this one-credit course (01:556:240) cultivates career readiness, confidence building, and self-advocacy for students looking for a career in STEM. These industry-based offerings include:
