Empowering Artistic Expression: The Center for Women in the Arts Finds New Home at Douglass Residential College
Rutgers University is excited to announce a transformation that will enrich the artistic and cultural landscape on campus. The esteemed Center for Women in the Arts and Humanities is evolving into the Center for Women in the Arts at Douglass Residential College, reflecting its commitment to empowering women in the arts and humanities.
The move to Douglass Residential College, known for its strong focus on empowering women through education, is a strategic and progressive step that will bring an array of exciting opportunities for the entire Rutgers community. While much of the Center's existing programming will continue, this transition will open new doors for collaboration, creativity, and inclusivity. The Center will have three main program areas:
- Gender and Arts: To offer workshops, seminars, courses, and activities that explore art and arts-related programming for a wider student population at Douglass and Rutgers.
- Artist in Residence: This joint program with the Mason Gross School of the Arts brings a distinguished artist to campus for a year to collaborate with students on hands-on creative projects, workshops, and exhibitions. These workshops and exhibits will be open to all students, fostering a diverse and inclusive creative environment.
- Amina Ross named the 2023-2024 Estelle Lebowitz Artist-in-Residence at Rutgers University.
- Mary H. Dana Women Artists Series at the Douglass Library: This annual series will continue to showcase exhibitions from the Artist in Residence, women artists, and Douglass students. Curated in collaboration with MGSA faculty and Zimmerli partners, this program will offer enriching opportunities for art enthusiasts throughout the year.
- “Amina Ross: so close” will be on view from October 13, 2023 – March 8, 2024, in the Mary H. Dana Women Artists Series Galleries, Douglass Library.
This transition to Douglass Residential College reaffirms our commitment to fostering creativity and empowerment through the arts, while also making these opportunities more accessible to the Rutgers community. The Center for Women in the Arts at Douglass looks forward to a vibrant future filled with artistic expression, collaboration, and inspiration.
