Students Begin Remote Instruction

On March 10, President Barchi announced that the University will move to remote instruction. Douglass understands the importance of facilitating a smooth transition for its students and instructors. As a result, the College is keeping in close contact with students to ensure their perspectives are heard. For Alexandra Anderson DRC’20, the measure, despite the obstacles it presents, is important for maintaining the public good.

“It’s not an ideal situation, but it makes the most sense to protect everyone right now,” she said. “I think it is very important to stop the spread of the virus. Halting the spread and reducing the number of cases will help alleviate burdens on our healthcare system.”

The technology of the 21st century has made remote instruction possible. Students will work via online modules, video chat, and other platforms to complete their assignments from their homes. Through webinars hosted by the BOLD Center, a social media art exhibition through the Global Village, career action plans, and numerous other online and over-the-phone initiatives, Douglass is also innovating programming to reach students in their homes.

“It is a great lesson in flexibility during challenging circumstances,” said Anderson. “We have tremendous technology now that helps us stay connected to school that we haven’t had in years previous.”

At the same time, access to technology is not universal. Anderson recognizes the limits in her home’s own capacity to surf the internet, and acknowledges that some students do not have internet access at all. Ensuring that students can still contact Douglass and participate in programming without the internet is a top priority of the College. Additionally, Douglass is making students aware of free public wi-fi hotspots that exist throughout the state.

During her time away from campus, Anderson hopes to stay connected to Douglass, the place she feels most at home on campus.

“I plan to regularly check in with my Douglass friends while we are away,” she said. “Also, I’ll definitely make sure I stay in contact with my Douglass advisors and staff to keep on top of ongoing projects and ideas.”

Douglass is committed to ensuring each student has the tools necessary to continue learning. Students may contact their staff mentors at any time for general guidance or assistance with extraordinary circumstances.
