Douglass Residential College offers two beautiful event spaces for rent: historic Voorhees Chapel, and the Kathleen W. Ludwig Global Village Living Learning Center.
Classic Elegance with Historic Charm
Voorhees Chapel is one of two chapels on the Rutgers University – New Brunswick campus. Built in 1925 with a donation from Elizabeth Rodman Voorhees, wife of Rutgers trustee Ralph Voorhees, this Georgian-style chapel is the college’s central location for ceremonies, plenaries, and concerts.
Historic Voorhees Chapel is named after Elizabeth Rodman Voorhees (1841-1924). After a seventeen-year engagement to Ralph Voorhees, the couple married and devoted their lives to philanthropy. In 1903, The Ralph Voorhees Library was dedicated, and Mrs. Voorhees bequeathed her residuary estate to the New Jersey College for Women (Douglass College) for the construction and maintenance of a building. Voorhees Chapel was the result. Although architecturally designed in the historic floor plan of a church, Voorhees is most unusual in that it has a working fireplace—normally behind doors—that is used once a year for the traditional Douglass College Yule Log Ceremony. Originally, a loft at the rear of the building was used for the choir; however, in 1975 a Karl Schuke pipe organ consisting of 64 ranks of pipes from which are derived 42 stops was installed in the loft.
Since 1927 the Chapel has been a vital part of campus life at Douglass College. One of the most visible buildings on the campus, Voorhees Chapel is the site of many traditional Douglass College events, and the site where plenary sessions for the first-year class are held and through the decades, that special place selected by many Douglass alumnae for their wedding ceremony. The Chapel is one of the oldest and most venerated historic buildings on both the Douglass and Rutgers Campuses.
Voorhees Chapel can hold up to 700 people and is great location for lectures, concerts, weddings or other large events. Become part of Douglass history by reserving your next function at Voorhees Chapel.
