Sophia House for Non-Traditional Students

Recognizing the fact that women who return to college after an absence of several years, or are starting college for the first time later in life, may have needs that differ from those of traditional students, Douglass Residential College offers a special interest house to support mature students.  Sophia House is a residential community for full-time Douglass women who are pursuing college five or more years after graduating from high school.

The Sophia House offers students an environment that supports academic pursuits and provides opportunities for social interaction.  We anticipate that students in the Sophia House value academic success and will take their coursework seriously.  Because of this, students are expected to maintain a 2.000 cumulative GPA while residing in the Sophia House.

The house is available for a 12-month period of time so that the house does not close during any of the vacation periods during the academic year.  A meal plan may be purchased through Rutgers Dining Services; however, you are not required to purchase a meal plan.

Students living in the Sophia House have private, single rooms and share a living room, dining room, kitchen, bathroom and laundry room.

There is a special application process to live in the Sophia House.  All interested students must contact Merylou Rodriguez, Director of Scholarships and Housing, in order to obtain an application.  Successful candidates must reapply each academic year for continued residence.

If you have questions about the Sophia House, or you would like to request an application, please contact Merylou Rodriguez, Director of Scholarships, Housing, and Student Engagement at merylou.rodriguez@echo.rutgers.edu.
