Associate Alumnae of Douglass College Fellowship Program Application for Douglass Residential College Graduating Seniors

 

Douglass Residential College and its generous donors continue their commitment to its students throughout their college career and beyond. The Associate Alumnae of Douglass College Fellowship Program for Douglass Residential College Graduating Seniors provides support via fellowship awards for Douglass Residential College graduating seniors (August 2018, January 2019 and May 2019) and are eligible to apply by downloading the PDF application form.

 

Please complete and return application and supplemental materials no later than March 1, 2019 via email at DRCScholarships@echo.rutgers.edu. You will be considered for all fellowships for which you are eligible.

 

Below are the names of the fellowships offered and some background information about the individuals in whose memories these fellowships are established.

 

Alumnae Fellowships

 

Ruth M. Adams Fellowship *

  • Established by the AADC in honor of former dean, Ruth Adams
  • Fellowship is for an alumna pursuing an advanced degree

 

Julia Baxter Bates Fellowship *

  • Established by the Black Alumnae Network in honor of the first known African-American graduate of NJC, Julia Baxter Bates ’38, who was prominent in the nation’s Civil Rights Movement.
  • Fellowship is for an African-American graduate pursuing an advanced degree who exhibits community involvement and leadership skills

 

Joseph B. and Florence Voorhees Cejka Fellowship *

  • Established by Florence Voorhees Cejka ’40, an English major.
  • Fellowship is for a current year graduate who will pursue an advanced degree in the humanities with preference to the study of English, history, comparative literature or philosophy.

 

Honorable Rosalie B. Cooper ’52 Fellowship *

  • Established by her husband in memory of the Honorable Rosalie B. Cooper ’52, who was inducted into the Douglass Society in 1994.
  • The Fellowship is for a Douglass alumna who has been accepted into law school.

 

Edith Newsom Estarabadi Fellowship *

  • Established by her husband, the Edith Newsom Estarabadi Fellowship honors a home economics major from the class of 1924.
  • Fellowship is for an alumna pursuing an advanced degree.

 

Evangeline Mundy Galas Fellowship *

  • Established by a bequest from Spanish major, Evangeline Mundy Galas ’35.
  • Fellowship is for a current year graduate with an excellent academic record who will pursue an advanced degree in Spanish or a Spanish-related field.

 

Maurice Lee Fellowship

  • Established as a tribute to Maurice Lee, who served as a loyal Douglass fellow, chair of the History Department, the Margaret Judson Professor of History, and benefactor of Douglass during his career at Douglass and Rutgers.
  • Fellowship is for a current year graduate who will pursue an advanced degree in history or art history.

 

Laurie Ann McDade Fellowship *

  • Established in memory of Laurie Ann McDade, a 1974 University College graduate, who served as a Residence Counselor at Douglass during the early 1980s and met an untimely death in 1988.
  • Fellowship is for a current year graduate who will pursue an advanced degree with preference to a degree in women’s studies, anthropology, or sociology.

 

Bertha Garber Modell Fellowship *

  • Established in memory of Bertha Garber Modell, sister of Dorothea Garber Cracas ’51.
  • Fellowship is for a current year graduate or an alumna.

 

Agnes McDede Murray Fellowship *

  • Established in honor of Agnes McDade Murray ’30, who served as Fund Agent for the Class of 1930 for more than 20 years and was the 1996 recipient of the Margaret T. Corwin Award for service to the Associate Alumnae of Douglass College.
  • Fellowship is for current year graduate.

 

James Neilson Fellowship *

  • Established to honor Neilson, the Douglass benefactor who contributed the Wood Lawn estate.
  • Fellowship is for a current year graduate who shows promise of a distinguished career who will pursue an advanced degree.

 

Norman and Ruth Feller Rosenberg Fellowship

  • Established by Norman and Ruth Feller Rosenberg ’37 in memory of their son, Ralph.
  • Fellowship is for a current year graduate who demonstrates excellence in science and will pursue a graduate degree in a science field.

 

Ruth E. Salny Fellowship *

  • Established by Ruth E. Salny ’30, a botany major who came from a family of physicians and scientists.
  • Fellowship is for a current year graduate who will pursue an advanced degree in the natural sciences, physics, chemistry, biology or medicine.

 

Joyce Kotler Schwartz Memorial Graduate Science Fellowship *

  • Established by Leonard Schwartz in memory of his wife, Joyce Kotler Schwartz ’63, and in honor of their children, Jan, Jill and Gail.
  • Fellowship is for an alumna or current year graduate who is doing graduate work in physics, chemistry, mathematics, biology, computers, geology, or engineering.

 

Hedwig Hass Turkenkopf Fellowship *

  • Established by a bequest from Hedwig Hass Turkenkopf, an English major from the Class of 1927.
  • Fellowship is for outstanding minority graduates.

 

Margaret Denton Wagner Fellowship *

  • Established in honor of Margaret Denton Wagner ’24, who served as President of the Associate Alumnae of Douglass College, Alumnae Trustee, and  President of the New Jersey State Federation of Women’s Clubs. Margaret was honored by the Associate Alumnae of Douglass College with the Margaret T. Corwin Award in 1943.
  • Fellowship is for an alumna pursuing an advanced degree.

 

Kelly Ann Wilson Fellowship *

  • Established as a memorial to Kelly Ann Wilson, who was an active Douglass student in 1984 when she was killed in an auto accident. Kelly was active in DCGA, the Orientation Committee and served as editor of  the Red Book. A double major in political science and sociology, she planned to attend law school.
  • Fellowship is for a current year graduate who will attend law school.

 

Adelaide Marcus Zagoren Science Fellowship *

  • Named for Adelaide Marcus Zagoren NJC ’40 who served as Executive Director of the Associate Alumnae of Douglass College for more than 25 years.
  • Fellowship is for a current year Douglass graduate who will pursue an advanced degree in the field of science.

 

Mable Smith Douglass Fellowship *

  • Awarded to a member or members of the graduating class who intended to continue in some profitable graduate study for at least one year after graduation.

 

Margaret Corwin Fellowship *

  • For graduating seniors.
