New Jersey First Lady Tammy Snyder Murphy will speak at Douglass Residential College’s 97th Convocation on May 12, encouraging graduating seniors to use their leadership skills to benefit the public in New Jersey and beyond.
“Douglass is honored to have the first lady of New Jersey, Tammy Murphy, speak at our convocation,” said Douglass Dean Jacquelyn Litt. “This is a special year for Douglass as we celebrate 100 years of educating women. Mrs. Murphy’s commitment to the advancement of women, including issues related to women’s health and the status of women in the workplace, will inspire the next generation of leaders in New Jersey.”
Murphy, who helps to shape public policy in her role as New Jersey’s first lady, also serves as secretary and charter member of The Climate Reality Action Fund, an organization founded by former Vice-President Al Gore. Over the years, she has worked with non-profits, a think-tank and other organizations focused on the environment, education, health care, youth and family services as well as the arts and trans-Atlantic relations.
The Power of 100 Years: Douglass Convocation will be from 10 am to 12 pm, May 12, in the College Avenue Gym (130 College Avenue, New Brunswick, NJ), where 588 students will be graduating. The keynote speaker will be Douglass alumna Imbolo Mbue, the author of The New York Times bestseller “Behold the Dreamers”, which won the PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction. Other speakers will include Maribeth Hugelmeyer, vice president of the New Jersey State Federation of Women’s Clubs, and student speaker Talyah Basit, who will discuss the power of community.
